EXPOSED BEAUTY

MFA Thesis | 2018

How can you “filter” your real-life?

Exposed Beauty is an immersive installation and video project that explores the future of cosmetics, wearable technology, and social media through attachable face lighting. My makeup enables the wearer to explore their URL (digital) life IRL (in-real-life) through mimicking the effects of retouching software and apps, specifically the “highlight” and “conceal” tools many platforms incorporate.

Exposed Beauty is an investigation of similar technologies questioned by GloPack in a new orientation. After the completion of Glopack, I grew interested in how social media filters could be more ingrained into our human physiology, thus, leading me to create social media cosmetics.

The lighting apparatus of Exposed Beauty is indented to be easy to make and apply, low-cost to produce, and disposable after use - in order to retain many of the qualities I find interesting about traditional cosmetics. Removing these factors make the device wearable technology rather than beauty technology.

Exposed Beauty also speaks to a larger audience than those who use tech wearables due to its minimalist design, low-tech attitude, and user-friendly application. My project has been equally utilized by women and men of all ages, from children to mature adults as there is little learning curve in understanding its conceptual nature.
